Panaji, Mar 3: Overall 82 percent people voted in Goa State Legislative Assembly polls held on Saturday March 3. The Election Commission officials have claimed the turnout as historic.
Election commission said that 8.3 lakh voters casted their vote in all the 40 constituencies and 1000-odd polling booths. North Goa had 83 percent and South Goa 80 percent people voting.
Joint chief electoral officer Narayan Navti said that the last highest percentage was during 2007 polls when 71 percent people came and exercised their franchise.
The polling remained peaceful except for minor incidents of violence. Five people were arrested for poll related offences by state police.
More women turned out for voting today.
Navti said that more than 85 percent voting was registered in 11 constituencies including Shiroda, Mandrem, Pernem, Sankhalim, St Andre, Sanguem, Sanvordem, Quepem, Bicholim, Poriem and Madkai.
The constituency of Sankhalim had highest number of voting. The constituency had 88.51 percent people voting. In all 88.04 percent people voted in Curtorim and 88.25 percent in Priol constituencies.
Velim constituency which reported 73.49 percent voting had lowest turnout. The polling is historic as the state has been witnessing polling between 65-71 percent, he said, adding the awareness created by authorities about voting paid off.
The election commission officials said that the poll monitoring system that was introduced for the first time worked very well. The PMS coverage was 85 percent. “We could not have 100 percent as there was a connectivity problem,” he said.
