Chikmagalur, Mar 3: A group of people assaulted Congress leaders including party candidate Jayaprakash Hegde, who visited Santaveri villae in Tarikere taluk in the district on Friday March 2 night to seek votes for the party in the coming bypoll.
During their campaigning, the villagers raised the topic of tiger conservation project. They demanded dropping of the project, as they said they would be virtually driven to streets if the project goes ahead as planned. The remarks made by Congress leaders in relation to this demand did not go down well with the villagers. A verbal altercation followed, after which some furious villagers assaulted Hegde and other party activists.
The leaders, baffled by the development, made good their escape from the village. Hegde was accompanied by party leaders, former MLA, Nagaraj, and leader, T V Shivashankarappa, among others.
Some villagers alleged that the Congress leaders had tried to offer the lure of money in the guise of soliciting their support to the party. They warned that they will boycott the bypoll.
