Udupi: Adrenaline Runs High at Nandikoor Kambala

Udupi, Feb 27: Karnataka chief minister, D V Sadananda Gowda, promised to release grants of one lac rupees each to 24 Kambalas being held in the district. He said this is being done to encourage Kambala, a folklore game.

He was speaking after accepting the felicitation offered to him on behalf of Kambala Committee during his visit to Adve-Nandikoor Koti Chennaya Jodukare Kambala near Padubidri in the district, held on Sunday February 26.

Kaup MLA, Lalaji R Mendon, presided over the meeting. Aikala Harish Shetty, president of Mumbai Buntara Sangha, who has received Rajyotsava Award, was also honoured on the occasion.

Dozens of buffalo pairs participated in this traditional Kambala enthusiastically. The audience also participated in large numbers.

MLAs, Abhay Chandra Jain and Ramanath Rai, MLCs, Capt Ganesh Karnik and Kota Srinivas Poojary, zila panchayat president, Katapadi Shankar Poojary, Udupi taluk panchayat president, Devadas Hebbar, Karkala taluk panchayat president, Jayaram Salian, several Mumbai-based entrepreneurs, zilla panchayat members, taluk panchayat members, district BJP president, Uday Kumar Shetty  and others were present.

Prof Gunapal Kadamba compered the programme.

    Sport is fine.But it can also lead to cruelty to animals.Why is the Bajrang Dal / VHP / Rama Sene quiet ? Do they get a pleasure in seeing their sacred Cow being made to run with a whip ?

    Dear Prabhu mam it is Kona or Eru means a type of He-Bufallow .female she-Bufallow is called Emme.But both are bufallows and hence I called them bufallows .Bulls are a different species all together they are used for Bull fight this is not bull fight .There are snugly fitting shoes with which one can run even in Mud water .It needs practise

    lol people don't own how much kambala buffalo owners spend to upkeep these buffaloes over a year.these kambala buffaloes are a rare breed.It also part of Bunt History with the ancient Arasa Kambala and Kadri Guthu Kambala being over thousand years old,held since the time of Alva/Alupa kings.Ignorant people with no sense of kambala's history,organisation and breeding/ upkeeep of buffaloes should read up a bit before they speak or comment.

    For all our friends who are opposin the Kambla should understand that, it is better that these animals go through the pain of some moment than being cut and made into the dinner plates. More over this sport is preserving one of the best breeds of buffaloes. These animals are looked after very well during the non Kambla season.. The owners take care of them so well that if you see the menu of these animals your eyes may pop up. After Each Kambla the animals are nursed so well that, not even a scar of the so called beatings show off on them. Those who are commenting on these sport must see how the animals are treated otherwise in this country right from the farm to salaughter house.

    one who understands the pain of the animals do not resort to this inhuman kamabla. Only sick and perverts enjoy heaping abuses inflicting wounds and torture to poor animals. I request the respected people who attended such sports to understand the plights of the hapless animals and stop this kambala immideately.

    Rishith , I appreciate taking the name of Mr. Suresh Anna, he have done a yoeman service to this Adve Kambla - if not him Adve Kambala would have gone into Oblivion. The best part is he did not accept any appeciation (sanmana) - when we all requested him to accept Sanmana he outrightly rejected. Really a great person.. This was a nice function and I was there right from yeesterday afternoon untill night. great show from people of adve.. these guys have jointly done a quite an impossible work by clearing a rock land into a great Cultural place. more is planned by the samity and my prayers are with them for the great success.

    Dr,Mam,it is not Bufallows but bulls.Runners after the bulls will not have safty shoes because it is not possible to run in watery mud with shoes.I do not look at this rural programme as entertaining game because here beating the dumb animals by runners after them is VERY VERY PAINFUL.THE ACT IS SO CRUEL.

    Thanks to CM Sadananda Gowda for awarding 1 lac rs. each to 24 kambala. this was promissed by so many cms but now Mr.Gowda taken action.Hats off to Nandikour Kambala samithi,where always something new will be there.
