Kasargod, Feb 24: A huge iron bar, around 20 cm long and weighing 35 kg, was found to have been planted on the railway tracks near Manjeshwar in the district. The piece was probably placed by disruptive elements aimed at conducting destructive activities, the people suspect.
It may be recalled that stone blocks and cement blocks had been found deposited on the railway tracks between Kumble and Manjeshwar a couple of times during September last. In the first case, presence of mind by locals had saved the railways from imminent tragedy, whereas the stone block kept on the track a week later was crushed after a goods train passed over it. Even though the policemen suspected involvement of terrorist groups in these activities, no headway has been achieved in investigation.
It is guessed that the iron piece this time was kept here by miscreants, making use of darkness created by load shedding on Wednesday night. After the local people, who saw the piece, passed on the information to railway personnel, policemen from Manjeshwar police station and railway police station visited the spot and removed the piece.
The policemen have registered this case, and have begun investigation.
