Karkala: Man Dies of Hunger, Family Refuses to Conduct Funeral

Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (SP)

Karkala, Feb 21: In a strange incident, the family of a senior citizen not only allowed him to die of hunger, but also refused to conduct his funeral. The incident occurred at Belman in the taluk.

Umesh (65) from Belman was found to have died near Belman Market on Sunday February 19. It is widely believed that he died of starvation. Umesh used to work as a mason since long, but had to stop working after an accident left him crippled at the waist. As the family members did not look after him, he used to roam around in the region, begging people for food. In the recent past, he fell ill and could not move about, the locals said.

Even after the family members were informed of Umesh’s death, they were not prepared to conduct his funeral. Rural police station sub-inspector, Azmat Ali, zilla panchayat member, Kedinje Supreeet Shetty, and Belman gram panchayat vice president, Jerald D’Souza, visited the spot and arranged for transporting the body to the mortuary of Belman primary health centre.

These times, it is difficult to assess the mentality of sane people as the motives could be many. Let's be fair and may true justice prevail through changing times.
As for the saying- ' sow the wind, reap the whirlwind' could hold true.

Mr.Umesh has had a bad fate. As the saying goes-'Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind',he might have given his parents or guardians a tough time. These times, it is difficult to assess the mentality of sane people as the motives could be many. I pray that we treat our blood relatives as humane as possible in line with the teachings of our religion and culture.

If locals knew that Umesh was starving, why could not they feed the poor man and look after him in some way the other? We usually cry over spilt milk. Or is it so, all around him paid no heed for this poor soul? Let us not allow another person to have the same plight.

Those who look after their old parents shall receive the blessings of God, spirits, angels and humans. The children whose very existance is owed to their parents must not forget that they shall reap what they sow. I am sure they shall receive back in full measure may be more for their wrong doings.
