Belgaum, Feb 18: In a strange incident which occurred in the second JMFC court here on Thursday February 16, a person, who accused the policemen of harassing him repeatedly, tried to commit suicide by consuming poisonous substance he had brought with him, in the presence of the judge of the court.
Although the act gave rise to anxious moments in the court room, he was shifted to the district hospital. Hospital sources said he is recovering.
Abbas Ali Maumin, a resident of Shivajinagar here, before drinking poison, said he has been dealing in kerosene since long. He accused the policemen of frequently charging him with smuggling kerosene and harassing him and his family members. “The policemen have been repeatedly summoning me, and my brothers, Nizamuddin Ali and Niaz Ali, to the police station. Deptuy superintendent of police, Ravi Channannavar, has been creating problems for us. All the family members get threatened now and then,” he said.
On a complaint made by the judge, a complaint of attempt to suicide was registered against Maumin. District superintendent of police, Sandeep Patil, said that a case had been registered against Maumin and two of his employees under Essential Commodities Act on February 14, and that Maumin had gone missing since then.
