Udupi: UPCL Row - MLA Demands Resignation of Union Ministers

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 7: Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon challenged former state minister Vasant Salian to seek resignations from top Congress leaders, for their involvement with the establishment of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) at Nandikoor near Padubidri. He was responding to Salian’s demand for the fomer’s resignation relating to the issue.

“I continue to oppose UPCL. Criminal proceedings registered against me and BJP activists relating to the agitation against UPCL were also taken up by court on Monday. Vasant Salian, instead of bothering me, seek clear stand of influential national level Congress leaders, Veerappa Moily, Oscar Fernandes, etc on UPCL. If this is not possible, he should pressurize them to resign,” Mendon suggested.

Mendon said he had raised written questions in assembly relating to UPCL and obtained answers. “I continue to raise the topic of UPCL and discuss environmental hazards with officials. The company will stop power generation temporarily from February 9 onwards for finalizing the work of drift eliminators to do away with the problems created by saline water,” Lalaji added.  He recalled that former Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy, who had sent about 150 delegates to Visakhapatnam for studying the thermal power plant there, had later rejected the report of this delegation and permitted UPCL to set foot here.

BJP spokesperson, Nagaraja Shetty Kujoor, said that UPCL could not have come into being if Congress leaders including Vasant Salian had raised their voices at the initial stages. He accused Salian of donning just the role of a guest during agitations against UPCL.

Coal fired thermal plants are worst air polluters. But for the Govt. profits are more important than the health & biodiversity of the region. instead of encouraging clear energy alternatives like solar, wind, the govt. is favouring dirty polluting industries.

The question is not aboyt if we need Thermal project or not. If UPCL is set in any ofthe western coutries as you say. it would have been closed long back. It is 100% poluting company who is not following basic norms mainly .. carrying fly ash in ooen truck, dumping fly ash in open an unprotected pond on hiher ground and excess rain water directly drained into rivlets and aquifires. drawing sea water and allowing the saline steam to evoporate in the environment due to which all the greenery in the region is destroyed. ing goondas as comntractors to threaten the locals who raise their voice. Now added to that, they are plying huge vehicles in the same old village roads without widening the road and endagering the villagers. Yo will be happy Vinod to get unteruppted electricity at your home at the cost of the livilyhood of the hapeless poor villagers. moreover the project of this magnaminity is not fit for ecologically fargile western coast.

Even after almost 60 years of Independence we don't have 24 hour electricity. These kind of projects often come up in the western world and no hue and cry is made. But it seems in our country opposition parties have to oppose everything. The main aim should be to resolve differences and identify the right steps so that this project comes up. If Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon doesn't need electricity, then it's good for him.. but we need it badly!
