Muscat, Feb 5: The second part of the 'Kudla Cup 2012' organized by Kudla Friends, Muscat on Friday February 3 at Muscat Sports Club grounds, Al Wadi Al Kabir, was a huge success. The relentless efforts and perfect planning by the trio leaders of Kudla Friends, Suraj Rebello, Srikanth Shetty and Yuvaraj Salian to unit all the communities of the Coastal Karnataka through a sports event was perfectly showcased through out the day.
The highlight of the second day of the Kudla Cup 2012 was the clean sweep by the players of the Mangalorean Catholic Center of the Parish (MCCP – Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi) with their brilliant performance in all four events. It was only MCCP, MCCP and MCCP through out the day. They were like great warriors winning all the four championship trophies with perseverance, talents and energy. Dolly Gomes, an eminent player of the community inspired her team to have a perfect game of Throwball and thus overpowered the robust Bunts team in the finals to secure the winner’s trophy.
Shaila D'Souza, Flavia Menezes, Jessie Pereira, Shalet Noronha, Celine D'Souza and Nimma Pereira the main players of MCCP exhibited best of their sports ability through out the tournament. In men’s volleyball, it was only the magic of flawless game of Dancy Correa, a young and energetic Karnataka state level volleyball player of yester years, lead his team to the victory. Dancy, a new arrival to Oman became an overnight hero of the community and everyone at the venue, specially, from the Mangalorean community, praised his fantastic talent of volleyball game. Wilson Mark D'Souza, current MCCP sports secretary and fine sports person in various categories, was the captain and mentor of both men’s teams and Flavia D'Souza, well known stage artiste and player was the captain of the MCCP’s ladies team of Tug of War.
In the morning, the event was inaugurated by S. K. Poojary, a reputed businessman in Oman, Managing Director of Red Rose Furnishing Co. LLC, founder member of Oman Billawas and an ardent supporter of Tulunadu art, culture and dramatics in Oman. Ashok Suvarna, Managing Director of Oman’s top media and event management company, NPA Events, was the guest of honor.
Throughout the day, the matches were played with great passion and sportsmanship. Nice and pleasant weather complimented the electrifying spirits of the players and enthusiastic feelings of the spectators. Cheering teams with colorful dresses filled the atmosphere with cheers and joy. Sumptuous lunch and snacks were also served throughout the day.
Daijiworld team spoke to some of the eminent personalities and leaders of the various communities at the venue and every one was greatly impressed with the organization of the event which was an impressive caliber. Dr C. K. Anchan – Founding Member of Oman Billawas and philanthropist of the community, said – In this event, Kudla Friends have brought all the communities of the Coastal Karnataka under one roof. We at Oman Billawas are proud to be part of such great event where everyone got together and played the games with full of zeal and enthusiasm in true spirits.
Mohammed Shukoor, Captain of SKMWA said – This event brought back the sweet memories of good olden days. We congratulate the efforts of the organizers in bringing all the members of South Kanara and Udupi region at one venue. This event showed our unity, strength and good will.
Damodhar Shetty, one of the prominent members of the Bunts community said – For the first time in Oman’s history the concept of uniting al the Kudla Communities through sports was envisaged and well organized by Kudla Friends. The atmosphere in the venue was really electrifying. The sportsmanship displayed by all the communities was commendable. This Kudla Cup was truly a demonstration of our great Tulunadu’s unity in diversity.
Stanley T H Fernandes, the current president of MCCP said – This event showed the unity among all the Kanaraites. Though there is varied diversity in culture and language in the daily lives of the people live in the coastal Karnataka region, but the prime factor was the unity in thoughts, understanding and human values. Kudla cup was an ideal venue to showcase the feelings of togetherness and friendship of our region.
After the tournaments, the prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Suraj Rebello. Ceremony commenced with a poem in Tulu recited by Clarence Pinto and in English by Jaya Ramesh Shettigar. Jeppu Chidananda Naik, a prominent business man from Qatar was the Chief Guest of the ceremony.
Six distinguished personalities of the various Kanarite communities were honored for their achievement in their respective professional fields, contribution to the welfare of the society and exceptional leadership qualities in their communities with floral bouquets, fruit baskets, honorary shawl and memento. The eminent members were Stanley T H Fernandes, Ramesh Shettigar, Sashidar Shetty Mallar, Ashok Suvarna, Sayyed Akbar Ali and Dr. S N Salian.
The members of the various communities who had supported the event were also honored with mementos.
