Mangalore, Jan 28: A team of doctors comprising surgeons Dr Rakesh Rai, Dr Erel Dias, Dr Suhith, Dr Jnaneshwari and Dr Harshvardhan (Anesthesiologist), operated on a case of cancer of the rectum, preserving the continence and continuity of the bowel.
A 64-year-old man came to Father Mullers with cancer of the rectum, at just 5 cm from the anal verge. The patient was evaluated and pre-operative chemo radiation was administered under the guidance of Dr Suresh Rao (radiation oncologist).
Following this, the team decided to do an ultra low anterior resection of rectum. This procedure saved the patient of permanent colostomy (diversion of the faecal matter through the abdominal wall). This procedure was performed with the help of harmonic scalpel and GI circular staplers. The patient has recovered well with no problems in continence.
