Udupi, Jan 26: District in-charge minister, Dr V S Acharya, said that appointment of two members to the committee appointed to look into the environmental impact of the thermal power plants of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) in place of those who have been removed, and a committee which will permanently monitor environmental implication of the plant, will be finalized before January 28.
Speaking about the possibility of saline water rain in the region, he said that UPCL has shown interest to install drift elevators to address this problem. “UPCL has already fitted this apparatus to its second unit. Is has taken steps to obtain permission to install drift elevator to the first plant too,” he confirmed.
Acharya also spoke of the interest shown by Birla Cement Company to set up its packing unit in 60 acres of land located in Padebettu village near Padubidri. “The company has said it will use fly ash of UPCL. Spokespersons of the company had met me in this regard. I have already visited such a unit of the company in Malegaon, and the unit will press into service Zylo Tanks to ensure that environmental pollution does not occur. Fly ash can also be used for bricks manufacture in addition to cement,” he explained.
