Udupi, Apr 3: A video of two bus crews brawling with steel rods has gone viral on social media. The two bus crews involved in the quarrel have been arrested.

The incident occurred at the Manipal bus stop on Wednesday evening. The video of the bus crew engaged in the street fight has widely circulated on social media. Alfaz and Vijaykumar, the bus conductors involved in the altercation, have been arrested by the Manipal police.

Both buses have also been seized by the Manipal police.

The bus crews of Anand Travels and Decent Travels, operating between Manipal and Mangaluru, were seen in the video engaging in a violent clash with steel rods. The crews even resorted to biting each other. Sources indicate that the dispute stemmed from issues related to bus timings on the route.

Both bus crews have filed counter-complaints against each other.

All the issues that arise in the private sector are due to the failure to operate buses according to their timetables. I have observed some influential bus operators delaying their buses, which affects the schedule of the next bus operated by a more responsible operator. If the responsible operator defends the delay of the previous bus, the influential operator may exhibit a bad attitude. Additionally, in some situations, there is no consistent gap between buses. To maintain collections, some bus staff may intentionally delay departures, which then impacts the next bus service. To avoid such situations, uniform timings should be allotted to all bus services. Installing GPS in all buses would allow monitoring by a control room to ensure proper scheduling. Moreover, regular training should be provided to bus staff to improve their behavior in front of the public. Private buses have a rich and beautiful history in the Mangalore and Udupi regions. If the Private Bus Operators Association fails to implement these changes, one day (or eventually), private bus services may be phased out from the Mangalore and Udupi regions in the interest of maintaining peace, harmony, as well as law and order.
