Mangaluru, Mar 27: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Wednesday, urging the construction of spur roads connecting Periyashanthi-Paichar and Guruvayanakere-Bajagoli to facilitate pilgrim travel to Kukke Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, and Kollur temples.
Accompanied by Beltangady MLA Harish Poonja, Capt Chowta emphasized the need to develop these two spur roads to enhance connectivity to major temples in the coastal region.

Connecting NH-75 and NH-275
Capt Chowta requested the upgradation of the Periyashanthi-Paichar road as a spur road linking NH-75 and NH-275. Currently, pilgrims traveling to Kukke Subrahmanya from Bengaluru must take the Shiradi Ghat route via NH-75, while those from Kerala use NH-275. Upgrading the Periyashanthi-Paichar road would provide a direct link between these highways, ensuring a smoother journey for devotees and tourists visiting Kukke Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala.
Linking NH-73 and NH-169
Similarly, he proposed the development of the Guruvayanakere-Bajagoli road as a spur road connecting NH-73 and NH-169. This route would significantly reduce travel time for pilgrims visiting Dharmasthala and the Sri Mookambika temple in Kollur. Additionally, the new road would help ease traffic congestion on existing highways while boosting tourism in the region.
Capt Chowta stressed that the development of these roads would greatly enhance temple tourism in Dakshina Kannada and the coastal belt while also improving infrastructure in the district. He pointed out that alternative roads would not only benefit the local economy but also mitigate environmental impact by reducing congestion on existing highways.
Positive response from minister Gadkari
Responding to the request, Minister Gadkari assured Capt Chowta that the proposals would be reviewed, and necessary action would be taken after assessing their feasibility. Capt Chowta expressed confidence that these infrastructure projects would strengthen road connectivity, provide a comfortable travel experience for pilgrims, and align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed India.
