Jeddah, Mar 12: Ukraine has expressed its willingness to accept a US-backed ‘immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire’ following extensive talks with an American delegation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A joint statement issued after the meeting emphasized that the ceasefire could be extended through mutual agreement, contingent on Russian cooperation.

The United States has pledged to resume intelligence sharing and security assistance with Ukraine, stressing that Russian reciprocity is key to achieving peace. Humanitarian relief efforts, particularly during the ceasefire, were also a crucial part of the discussions, as per Xinhua news agency.

Both sides agreed to establish negotiating teams to work towards a lasting peace, with the US reaffirming its commitment to engage Russian representatives. Ukraine, on the other hand, emphasized the role of European partners in the process. Additionally, both nations vowed to finalize a comprehensive agreement aimed at developing Ukraine's critical mineral resources to boost its economy.

The high-profile meeting in Jeddah was attended by US secretary of State Marco Rubio and National security advisor Mike Waltz. Representing Ukraine were President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, foreign minister Andrii Sybiha, and defense minister Rustem Umerov, among others. Saudi foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and National security advisor Musaed bin Muhammad Al-Aiban were also present.

Speaking at a press conference, US secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope that Russia would accept the ceasefire proposal. He stated that Ukraine’s commitment would be conveyed through diplomatic channels and other means, adding, "The ball is in their court."

Meanwhile, President Zelensky described the discussions as ‘good and constructive’ and affirmed that the ceasefire would take effect immediately if Russia agrees.

US President Donald Trump also weighed in, revealing his intention to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin later in the week, expressing hope for a swift resolution.

On the Russian side, foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova acknowledged the possibility of engaging with US representatives in the coming days. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov maintained that while Moscow expects Washington to share details of the negotiations, premature celebrations should be avoided.

International leaders, including European commission president Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, welcomed the US-Ukraine talks, with Macron urging NATO and European military chiefs to devise a credible security plan for Ukraine.
