Karnataka to ban plastic use in idli preparation cites health risks

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 27: The Karnataka government has decided to ban the use of plastic sheets in idli preparation at hotels and food establishments, citing serious health hazards, health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced on Thursday.

Many eateries use plastic sheets to steam idlis, a practice that health officials warn can cause harmful chemicals to leach into the food. "Plastic in food preparation is a major public health concern. Toxic substances from plastic mix with the food when exposed to heat, posing serious health risks. I urge all hotels and eateries to switch to safer alternatives like stainless steel plates or banana leaves," the minister said.

Recent tests conducted by the food and safety department found that out of 251 samples collected from hotels across the state, 51 were deemed unsafe due to plastic contamination. "The use of plastic in idli preparation has increased significantly, and to protect public health, we are enforcing a strict ban," he added.

An official notification formalising the ban will be issued within two days. The minister also warned that fines and legal action would be imposed on establishments that continue using plastic in food preparation.

Traditionally, cotton cloth was used to make idlis, but many eateries have shifted to plastic for convenience. Following complaints, health department officials investigated the matter and confirmed the health risks. "Plastic is carcinogenic and should not be used in cooking. There is no justification for its use, and we will take stringent measures to stop it," Gundu Rao said.

The government will also launch awareness campaigns to ensure compliance with the ban and encourage safer cooking practices.

Digest this. It takes more than ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED years to eliminate the plastic content of a SINGLE toothbrush !!!!!! Ban plastic but allow the use of clothes? 90% of such hotels use clothes on which the batter is poured so that the idlis don't crack after steaming. God only knows how many times a year those clothes are washed !!

Plastic is a health hazard, and its use must be restricted to the maximum extent in food preparation. A very good decision by the government, and I hope it is implemented soon
