Udupi: Death of Policeman at Katapadi – Police Arrest Four

Udupi, Jan 5: The district police, who have been investigating the case of the death of a police head constable during the entertainment programme organized on New Year eve, which continued beyond midnight, have arrested four persons. They have been identified as Rafiq (37), Latif (24), Abubakker (37), and Bhaskar (28), all residents of Katapadi and nearby places.
On being produced them in the court, they were remanded to judicial custody till January 18. The investigation, led by Kaup circle inspector of police, Cheluvaraju, reportedly has made good progress.
The policemen of Katapadi police outpost had urged those who continued to revel at the programme organized on Sunday night by Adarsha Youth Club, to pack up, and stick to government rules relating to the timings. The youth, who were not prepared to relent, had resorted to stone throwing at the policemen, resulting in serious injuries to head constable, Yogish Padakannaya (53), to his head, chest, and abdomen regions. Padakannaya had breathed his last the next day at the government hospital here.
Investigation into the above death has been entrusted to four police teams, each of which is led by sub-inspectors of police from Kaup, district crime intelligence bureau, and Padubidri stations, apart from Kaup circle inspector, B Cheluvaraju.
