Mumbai Baby battles rare respiratory virus amid global HMPV surge

Mumbai, Jan 8: A six-month-old baby from Mumbai was admitted to the ICU at Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, after testing positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus causing global concern. The baby, brought in on January 1 with severe cough and breathing difficulties, had dangerously low oxygen levels. Intensive care and advanced tests, including a multiplex PCR, confirmed the HMPV diagnosis.

While local civic authorities have not officially reported the case, doctors note similar instances nationwide, including two recent cases in Nagpur. HMPV, though not new, poses significant risks for infants and older adults, prompting experts to call for greater awareness and vigilance.

Rapid tests, priced at ?7,000, can now detect HMPV and other respiratory viruses, aiding in timely diagnosis. However, the lack of mandatory reporting guidelines limits effective tracking of the virus's spread.

The baby received symptomatic treatment, including bronchodilators, and was discharged after five days. Pediatrician Dr. Sanjeev Ahuja emphasized the need for heightened surveillance and awareness, as studies show HMPV is a frequent cause of respiratory illnesses in children.

Health authorities in Mumbai are stepping up monitoring for flu-like illnesses but stress the importance of better reporting to prevent potential outbreaks.
