Lucknow, Dec 11: In a change of events, police arrested a criminal-turned Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP from Jaunpur Dhananjay Singh on Sunday. The arrest was done in connection with the double murder of backward community members. He was arrested from his official residence in multi storeyed minister's residence in Lucknow.
Dhananjay's case is also an example of see-saw in politics. With over a dozen cases pending against him, Dhananjay has been an independent MLA from Rari segment in Jaunpur. After his stint with Lok Jan Shakti party of Ram Vilas Paswan he was also a member of Samajwadi Party (SP).
He however joined BSP in 2009 and was rewarded with ticket and won from Jaunpur parliamentary seat. His father Rajdev Singh is still an MLA from Rari segment. Dhananjay was again in news after the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme scam in UP. The scam led to the murder of three health officials including two Chief Medical Officers (CMO).
He lost favour with BSP supremo and was sidelined in the party. However, he was again rehabilated a few days ago and was made incharge of Khatriya community. But once again he has been booked by the police.
The arrest was done with regard to a double murder case of two Nishad community members in Jaunpur on April 1, 2010. The case was with the crime branch of the Criminal Investigations Department (CB-CID) of the state.
However, the arrest was no less dramatic. First Dhananjay refused to emerge from his room with his supporters blocking the entry of police.
A mild force was used to disperse them. Later, he refused to sit in police Jeep and insisted on going on his SUV. However, police showed their true colour and he sat at the rear seat of the Jeep.
However, he managed to speak to the media for a few seconds before being taken away. "I am being arrested illegally as the police does not have any arrest warrant. Chief Minister Mayawati is against me and she is harassing me," he said. He will be produced before the magistrate in Jaunpur on Monday. He also claimed that he had refused to accept the dictats of CM so he is being targetted.
