Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 27: In a welcoming decision for devotees, pilgrims traveling to Sabarimala can now carry 'Irumudi' in their cabin bags on flights until January 20, 2025.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu announced that this special allowance is designed to facilitate the journey for thousands of pilgrims heading to the temple from mid-November through January. Traditionally, 'Irumudi' includes a ghee-filled coconut among other offerings.

While current regulations typically prohibit carrying coconuts in cabin bags, this exemption will be granted following thorough security checks, including X-ray and physical inspections.

The Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple will be open for two months, attracting millions of devotees each year. Only those carrying 'Irumudi' on their heads can ascend the 18 sacred steps to the temple's sanctum, while others must use an alternate route.
