Mangalore, Dec 2: Varija Shetty (70), residing in 6th Cross Road in Attavar in the city has complained that Nirmala Veena Poojary, a resident of Kopar Khairane in Navi Mumbai, has defrauded her, and taken away her gold ornaments. She says that Nirmala (32) was staying in her home as a paying guest with the fake name, Savita. The incident occurred on Wednesday November 30.
Varija claims that Savita was introduced to her by her neighbour, Prema, four to five days back. Savita stayed at home during the day and remained outside at night. On Wednesday, Savita is said to have told Varija that she wants to send a photograph of herself to her husband, and borrowed gold ornaments belonging to Varija for the purpose. Varija handed over ornaments weighing about 80 grams, approximately valued at Rs 1.5 lac, to Savita.
Varija accompanied Savita during the latter’s visit to a photo studio in Hampankatta area. Savita then took Varija to a provision store near State Bank Circle, where she gave a slip to Varija. Varija has registered a case in this connection at Pandeshwar police station.
During investigation, the policemen found that Savita was in fact, Nirmala’s fake name and that she holds a passport that is valid till 2016. Nirmala is a native of Mundkur in the taluk, and is a resident of Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai, as per address furnished in the passport. Varija Stays alone, as other members of the family stay at different places. They also learnt that on the recommendation of a relative of her husband, Prema reportedly had asked Varija Shetty to accommodate Savita in her house as a paying guest.
