Mangaluru, Sep 29: Apoorva Shetty, a resident of Pumpwell in the city, won Rs 6.4 lac on the popular reality show KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati), which airs on Sony TV. During the show, she spoke to her uncle in Tulu while using the 'phone a friend' lifeline, a moment widely appreciated by the Tulu community.

The episode was aired on the night of September 27.

Apoorva correctly answered the first 10 questions but faced a challenge with the 11th: "Which country has the highest area of mangrove forest?" The options were Brazil, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. Unsure of the answer, Apoorva called her uncle, asking the question in Tulu. He suggested Nigeria, but feeling uncertain, she decided to quit the game, securing Rs 6.4 lac as her prize money.

During the competition, Apoorva shared with Amitabh Bachchan that her father is a big fan of his.

In a heartwarming moment, Bachchan called her father Lokesh on video, allowing him to converse with Apoorva in Tulu. Lokesh was emotional while speaking to Amitabh, shedding tears of joy, which also moved Apoorva. Amitabh graciously offered her a napkin to wipe her tears.

In DK people of many religions and languages live in coexistence using Tule as medium of communication. My growing up age, we used to communicate in Tulu with my Cristian/non-Cristian friend circle. I love like Tulu language. Sort of pride & prestige!

“Congratulations to Apoorva Shetty for winning 6.4 lakhs on KBC. At least she showed the world by speaking in Tulu that no language is greater than one’s mother tongue. Woh Ansoo, aur woh Napkin hai Rabba!!''
