Udupi, Sep 21: The newly inaugurated Santhekatte underpass, opened on April 7, is already showing signs of rapid deterioration, raising serious safety concerns. Large potholes have formed within months due to substandard construction, affecting traffic flow and posing hazards to commuters.

Ongoing construction has disrupted traffic, and dust from the site is reducing visibility. Heavy traffic is being reported on both the underpass and the service road, which has become a preferred route for drivers, despite prohibitions on heavy vehicles. This has increased the risk for commuters due to ongoing construction activities.

MP Kota Srinivas Poojary had directed officials to apply wet mix to the road daily and begin repairs once the rains subside. However, no action has been taken by the responsible authorities, worsening the situation.

The underpass is a key link connecting multiple areas, and traffic congestion is especially severe on weekends. The incomplete construction on one half of the underpass is compounding the problem, leading to significant disruptions. Motorists, including two-wheeler riders, are at heightened risk as rain-filled potholes obscure the depth, making accidents more likely.

Heavy vehicles splashing muddy water further endanger two-wheeler riders, while inadequate drainage causes water accumulation, making driving conditions treacherous. Local authorities need to urgently install safety measures and improve visibility, especially at night, to protect commuters. Addressing these issues has become critical for public safety.

This is a trailer for what is going to happen to nanthoor and KPT junctions where underpasses have been sanctioned. Nanthoor underpass and service road work is going at a snails pace. Imagine the misery in store for the residents.

Deterioration is not the word. The word is pathetic, selfish, careless inhumane behaviour from the politicians. They care a damn if a few lives go under the trucks or buses. I took that road today and realised how dangerous it is for two wheelers. Very high chances of a two wheeler falling down and going under a heavy vehicle.

You must go to Kerala and see how the NH 66 work is done. No major pulic inconvenience even during the construction stage. The road done is as good as a highway of any developed country. This can happen only if there is no corruption at any level. In Karnataka both the parties wants power and only try to blame eaxh other. We the public are fools to vote them and what we loose is only our hard earned money going thru tax.
