Mangalore: Income Tax Raid on Eight Doctors in City

Mangalore, Nov 23: IT department officials from Bangalore swooped down on eight doctors in the city on the morning of Wednesday November 23.


Update: 12.45 pm

The raid operation is currently going on against the doctors in different parts of the city. In all, eight clinics and residences were raided, among which two are Kaibattalu and Doctors' Colony, Water Woods, both in Kadri, and another in Balmatta.

It is said that the IT officials raided after reports that some of the doctors in the city had purchased cars worth Rs 60 lacs without applying for loans. Also, unconfirmed reports said that the doctors were also involved in an illegal revaluation of land and consequent share transfer to general public.

Sources said that nearly 130 IT officials are part of the operation.

    Iam an advocate general and also a doctorate in criminal physcology.
    Making money isnt wrong. People need to work hard and there is nothing wrong in earning any money.
    Is it written at A mercedes benz showroom or a lexus showroom that the car belongs to only one Dr.Rajan. No if a businessman namely one Jinesh works and acheieves in makes money work for him and buys a lexus - its an acheievemnt.
    in the same manner - any person in india can achieve anything.sky is the limit. I cant comment on other doctors - but Dr.R.L.Kamat was my dads cardiologist and I KNOW he is an Upright person.
    These raids by IT Officials are a result of tip given by some chartered accountants and raid takes place to fool general public.When memory faded in next 3 days- the IT Officials take bribe and share it with the tipping Auditors and close the case.This is a normal phenomena and a game to fool public.

    Doctors,Medical colleges & nursing instituitions are the main backbone behind the development of Mangalore city in no time.Hike in petrol,Diesel,Gas,Milk & other commodities do also make difference to these doctors. The daily wage of a mason,carpenter, plumber, even a labour has gone upto 500 to 800 Rs.The profession of a doctor lies in diagnosing a disease which includes all those blood test,MRI,CT scan, so nd so... Doctors are neither God nor angels, they are human beings like us... Respect them for saving your life and also for sacrificing their food,sleep,family,happiness, frustrations all for saving ur kin,,ur mother,,ur father,,ur brother,,,ur relative..ur near nd dear ones...so let more and more doctors and multi speciality hospitals come up in mangalore to save human life rather than waiting for these goverment hospitals to come up with latest technologies......     Present doctors particularly cardiologists should understand that they are here to serve the patients and not to chew the blood. Money is not the only thing in life. I could see some cardiology doctors in famous college were giving commission to the auto, taxi people to get cases from neighbouring state . then if its esi, mediclaim etc., all your bill will cross 2 lacks & above. Hospital management also encourges for this. Very sad. God should save the patients or Income tax people.

    IT Dept should raid some real crooks who don't pay taxes. These doctors are really good doctors (Objective opinion) with high calibre. This surely must be the foul play of few competing doctors who lack any calibre. Dr Alva/Tunga/Kamath and all others are really great doctors. I'm sure a patient who has been treated well will always keep returning to these doctors!!

    For those who cribbing about doctors charging high fees. Govt has build the Wenlock and Lady Gousean hospital one can get free treatment!!! Medical education is so expensive unless u get in few govt medical college. Even if u get a merit MD/MS degree one has to pay nearly 15-20 laks thats normal fees for any private medical college. One has to get education loan to pay the fees!! money wont grow on trees nor govt gives. After all one has to pay the loan. Whats wrong in charging 200 to 300 as consultation fees! do you think this amount when u go for a multiplex or a restaurant !When it comes to health we make a big fuss! Cost of money to run a hospital is not joke! so much man power , nursing staff, technical staff etc. Government wont pay for it! most of the doctors agree u need to sacrifice 10to12 years of your life in studying those fat books to get a degree. A doctor will start earning fair enough at the age of 35 unlike a govt official or IT dept. Think!! its easy comment!!

    Most jelaous people are Doctors. They do not like their fellow doctors doing well and as soon as they relaise some of their fellow DOctors are doing well they start spreading rumours and start atacking those people. Raids on these DOctors like Dr Hamsraj Alva who is an excellent physician must surely must not have made any irregularities on income tax retrun, I am sure soem of his rivals are behidn this attack!!

    some of these doctors truly deserve wat happened. Some of them keep up to their work ethics and are very dedicated to the profession but most of them dont. the incident is a eye opener to the rest of the doctors in the fraternity. A particular Dr, physician is known to take the patients for a ride, charging exorbitantly and fleecing the patients by referring them to all the doctors in a particular hospital.

    I admire the work done by Dr. Hansraj/Dr. R.L.Kamath/Dr. Deepak Rai/Dr.Ravish Thunga/ Dr. Yusuf/Dr.Ali Kumble, Each one is a specialist who have mastered their art of Medicine/ Surgery/ Psychiatry/ Pediatrics/ Cardiology. Are they different from other doctors in Mangalore,
    Would you go for a shoulder arthroscopy to a Tantrik or visit an Orthopaedician like Dr. Deepak Rai.
    COMPARE THE COSTS WITH THE INTERNATIONAL COSTS.
    Do we get social security for paying taxes?
    Would you prefer to visit the Govt. Hospitals that these taxes pay for?
    Seriously, the Doctors mentioned here are Masters of their Art and should be paid their due. There is no shame in making money. You work hard and earn more.
    The Officers are only doing their Job, But where does the Tax go... For pathetically made Govt. Infrastructure.

    Look for the big & posh houses / bungalows in Mangalore and I am sure you will find at least 85% of them are non tax payers.Tax paying is age old tradition so what is the problem pay tax and live peacefully if you don't want to pay tax then live in a small house and do some charity work, feed the poor and you will rewarded in three fold. Which one you chose pay no tax and live in shame or pay to the poor and live in honor

    God has given you all this,,, at least use a fraction of time to serve poor without taking fat fee from them....Iam sure people will recognise and truly respect you then.....

    Few years back an aged relation of mine was going through menopause and suffering from accessive bleeding. She visited her gaenic and was referred her for few tests. On receiving test report she went back to the clinic. The doctors husband, a doctor himself looked at the report and said.. a simple treatment should take care of this problem but the lady doctor asked her to get admitted immediately and have an operation as it is very serious!!! However, with some excuses, my relation walked out and went to a very famous Gaenic - Dr Purandare for a second opinion. He did a few hours of radium treatment and she was out with no surgery and spending a 10th of actual cost. So there are doctors who are ruthless and looters and there are doctors who give credance to thier profession and serve the patients well. But luck may not be on your side always!!

    Good appeal from Dr.S.Kamath.This is a message to the society.We have a doctor in my village is serving the public since long many years like 30 .His treatment is very effective and cost is bearable for a common man.For his ability he would be a millionare if he operates in any metros.It would not be a difficult matter for him if he wishes to do that.But until today he is serving the village and the village benifitted by him.
    Several doctors in the main cities famous in their profession parellelly shave the patients with heavy bills.Mainly the consultant doctors in the clinics.Many of the occasions patients & his kins will rethink to visit the hospital again or many of the patients lose the life as well as money , battling with artificial respiration system.Nowdays majority of the public experiences this, created an anger among the public.There is a proverb in kannada"Akki jotheyalli kallu rubbitu".So even though we have both kinds of Doctors with us Major portion covered by the second category.A very unfortunate & worrying matter.

    Even though the doctors take Rs. 200 or more as consultation fees they make more money in operations. Even though operation is not required they will advise for a operation. See delivery cases in Managalore, mostly 99% is Ceasarean. Were the money is coming from from all this hospital charges, operation charges, etc. They are minting money like anything. And most of the doctors are owning big big complexes which are given on rent.

    The money which is squeezed from the patient is invested in real estate there are some clinics which are become the offices of real estate and there so many doctors who are become agents and builders and they are obstrutions for the people who are into this field and they are trying to grab more and more what they require so it is good IT officials shoud put a raid.

    I have read various comments mostly against the doctors. Is it not premature for us to pass adverse remarks against doctors in general? There may b a few doctors who charge very high consultation fees and without any receipts too but it is not fair to generalize and condemn the noble profession. I am in close touch with doctors like Dr. Alva, Dr. Rai, Dr. Joshua, Dr. Farias and several others from Father Muller's Hospital and I have no hesitation in saying that a patient and patient care comes first to them.

    Before condemning the profession let us wait and see what the Income Tax Department has unearthed.

    medical profession has deteriorated
    in its moral and ethical purpose:
    turned as a pure business to make
    money in a hurry. It is true that
    the Doctors are spending money to get the eduction, but the vast majority of the doctors are in this
    profession to get rich through
    taking advantage of the sick people through scaring them and pushing them to many unnecessary

    Well, it's a valid point raised by few that the real issue is not the exorbitant fee charged by the Doctors. True. Professionals have every RIGHT to charge for their services. But it is also their DUTY to render a receipt for their SERVICES, so that the right amount of Income Tax or Service Tax can be applied to it. Can't the Doctors hire a clerical assistant to do this job. Now, don't tell me they cannot afford to keep one!!!

    Good, that IT Department Raided these Doctors Den. For Major operations/treatments they ask cash which is to handled by some keen nurses and other staff. They should cease all the accounts of these hospitals who maintains and issues bogus bills to loot the Govt. Similarly IT should raid some Govt Officers, Lawyers and Bank Officials.

    Dear Dr.S.Kamath..Majority of Doctors make money now a days.Some Doctors in Government Hospitals treat patients in very bad manner.So,general opinion of public is that Doctors will loot patients if they get a chance.It doesn't mean that all doctors are money minded people.There are very straight forward,down to earth doctors in our country.But we can see such doctors in few numbers.That is the problem.

    now there are many doctors are not only charging high fees but also commited to so many pharmaceutical company and taking the money by alternative ways like by cash or valuable gift(vehicle) & prescribing unwanted medicin to the pateint ex:if any one quality of medicin/product(50 to 100 years old co) availabel at 5rs in a market but doctors will go for 50 rs product bcz he has commited to that co even they dont mind abt the quality or weather tha product approved by fda and unnecessarily continuing long terms of theraphy for his benifits not for all few doctors. and in a same place some genwin doctors are there like kishor kumar ubarangala some doctors are making lacs of the money from this kind of activity so now after Long awaited dream come true now god punished them, they have to annwar thanks to india ........

    Charges of a doctor depends on the consultation, consumables and the reputation of the doctor. When you go to a reputed doctor,charges are generally high.Dont you spend a Rs 200 on a movie at a multiplex? Doctors in Mangalore are less expensive than many other towns/cities.

    The last picture is the dispensary of a famous psychiatrist who has a big clientele! It is shocking to note that not satisfied with the huge income in their original profession, they were also resorting to land revaluation business!! The more one has, the more they want and this attitude lands them in serious trouble. It was high time that the fear factor being brought into the minds of these doctors who fleece the general public irrespective of the patient being rich or poor!! No doubt they are serving the sick with all dedication, but that does not absolve them of paying IT at least minimal tax per the law of the land. There is no doubt most of the doctors evade tax and use it to buy material comforts!!!

    most of our doctors did medical science on non-merit basis. so, naturally they go for making money to recover what they spent during their study. usually, doctors dedicate their service for social treatment, but they do like complete business! if the situation continues like this, no way of survival for poor and middle class people in the country.

    Recently I asked a doctor about the exorbitant fees they charge for consultation.He says an MS seat in Ortho. in a reputed medical seat one has to pay 75 lacs donation and on completion the bill will touch a crore and hence there is no option but to charge the fees.

    The problem in medical private practice in india, esp mangalore, is that 1. one has to manage a lot of black money(atrocious income tax rules, small population tax net ) with 2. poor infrastructure and other services,and 3. avoid conspicuous consumption.Managing black money becomes more important than managing patients.Shame!All these three points are not there in these gulf states.So for the same kind of money, these gulf states provide for 1. work-life balance(such as fixed working hours), 2. all white money, 3. excellent infrastructure and quality of life, 4. No problems of conspicuos consumption. If I drove the same car I have in bahrain in mangalore, just because I have the money, IT would have come knocking on my door !! Good thing I left-full peace of mindpractising medicine only not money making.

    i am very glad that this is happening. Recently one of the famous doctors wife (also a doctor) got a grant of 50 lakhs from Govt of India for a study. This amount is used to buy a 50 laksh car :-) look at the way educated people are cheating the government and society.

    Please be a little Sympathetic towards them too .I dont know alL of them But Dr R L kamath is a good Cardiologist if I am right .They Save Your Life and they work both day and Night 24 hours x 365 days .But Off course tax has to be paid that is Duty .But Govt has kept Health out of Service Tax for the very same reason

    the issue here is not about the fees charged. professionals have a right to charge for their services.btw medical services in mangalore are cheap compared to most other places.it is about paying income tax.all have to pay for their income.there re many people who re potential evaders doctors, lawyers, architects, builders, private college owners, all businesses and firms, subregistrars, govt offcials including all depts,jewellers, other shop keepers etc etc.regarding receipts, most places have separate bill books for customers and for IT dept.actually any place where cash is paid should be under scrutiny.these raids are only a reminder to all to pay taxes, only way is for govt to not allow any cash trasactions above 20000 rs. any payment above that has to be only by cheque or bank transfer etc. but easier said than done..or find some other way to curb black money.

    The consultation fee charged by some of Mangalore's Doctors is exorbitant. After surgery or other procedures the patient is not reviewed in the Hospital by the doctors everyday as they are busy minting money in their Clinics. They "become free" after 11 pm and royally walk in to disturb the patient's sleep. It's high time that these "so-called-Noble-professionals" are brought to book.

    Hi guys,those who have paid exhorbitant consutation fees paid to Doctors in Mangalore,pl bear in mind that there are lot of commentators here to defend them!For MBBS degree one had to shell out Rs.40 lacs and for MD degree another 1 crore!!! If somebody from public intervene to get justice, people will brand them as BD,RSS,SRS,goon and what not!!!
    So guys don't open your mouth here in a different way.Stick to your view point what been for that happened in Mangalore in late Ramesh's case two weeks back at Omega Hospital!!!
    Doctors and Hospitals in Mangalore are extremely good and they charging just normal!!!

    I am very happy to read this... I had gone to a reputed doc in mangalore for a small skin infection on my foot...he charged 800 rupees for a 10 min checkup and spray on the affected area...i asked him bill, he gave me a handwritten paper...when i returned to UAE, the problem appeared again...thankfully the Indian doctor in UAE was good...

    IT raid on doctors?? something very strange...! Dear IT dept., there are very big fish in Indian Political System. I do understand about the doctors sky high fees...but don’t forget there are govt hospitals for people who cannot afford. Lets not crib on something called doctors sky high fee..Its just so simple, dont give importance to the person whom you think is very expensive and automatically after few years result will be decrease in doctors fees by 40%..cheers guys...!

    Ha ha ha..... i salute my India. Long awaited dream come true. other day i met a doctor for little weakness. after 3 hours long wait i got to do some test and result is 1300/ buks. but after consuming the medicine it got more. now i stopped medicine. my weakness also gone. i felt really bad for the fees i paid. we never pay nicely to the poor who need real help. we pay big to royal beggers. sorry doctors.

    I am concerned about the fate of the patients who are under the treatment of these doctors. Hope they will not get "wrong treatment" due to the sudden TENSION of this IT Raid. High time these money minting doctors start using NAVARATNA hair oil (as advertised by Amitabh bachchan) to get relief from this tension till the completion of this unexprected raid !!!

IT dept need to take on other mega city's Doctors including HOSPITALS which are owned by group of doctors.Now a days it is not HOSPITAL it is like HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY.Once admitted to hospital,you would be charged with four digits minimum,delayed discharge etc etc....

    This is very good Operation which is required to be conducted through the country and through out the year. Most of the professionals like Doctors, Advocates mint and loot money in the name of consultation which goes unaccounted. Most of these white color professionals who gets artificial respect from the society are Tax Evaders. Who love to loot money from the patient but hate to pay the due tax to the govt.
    Let them be rich no issues with that, but tax to the govt should be paid by all. It should not vary for Salaried class and business class. It should be equal for all. and All the tax evaders should be punished heavily.

    Doctors profession is a noble profession but this was only sometime back. Today doctors fees are sky rocketing because they have to make good for the donation they have paid to the colleges. Which doctor gives you receipt for the consultation. Its a highly debatable subject.
