Modi govt clears 'One Nation, One Election' proposal

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS): The Narendra Modi government on Wednesday approved former President Ram Nath Kovind-led panel report on 'One Nation, One Election', and a bill to this effect (for holding simultaneous polls) is likely to be introduced in the upcoming Winter session of Parliament.

The development comes after the high-level panel led by Ram Nath Kovind was placed before the Union Cabinet.

The 'One Nation, One Election' proposes to synchronise the Parliamentary and Assembly elections. The clearance of 'One Nation, One Election' was also reportedly under the 100-day agenda of the Modi government.

Time and again Prime Minister Modi has underlined the need and importance of clubbing the elections under one schedule while highlighting how the country "pays a price" for remaining in election season throughout the year.

The high-level committee headed by Ram Nath Kovind submitted the report in March this year and recommended the preparation of common electoral roll and voter ID cards by the Election Commission(ECI), in consultation with state election authorities.

"Simultaneous polls will help save resources, remove the impediments and help realise the aspirations of "India, that is Bharat", the panel had said.

The Opposition, however, remains unimpressed with the idea of 'one nation, one election'. Many opposition parties including Congress, AAP and others have voiced their displeasure and discontent against such electoral practice and accused the BJP of forcing a presidential form of governance in the country by doing away with the existing one.

Notably, the idea of 'one nation, one election’ was first proposed in the 1980s.

Previously, the simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and state assemblies were held in 1951-52, 1957, 1962 and 1967. However, the cycle was disrupted due to the premature dissolution of some Assemblies.

Idea is not new. It was in existence then and already "tried, tested but not fully trusted" method as per our federal structure of governance!. But the lacunae here in today's "Digital Era" is how elections can be manipulated with the EVM technology which again is not 100% foolproof🤔(sure shot doubtful). The recent example of NAMO's DEMO has gone as a big "Monumental Disaster" already proved("Tried, Tested

It's difficult to foresee how one nation one election will work in India, Govt was not able to conduct Lok Sabha Election of entire nation in one stretch. They conducted it in phased manner and it took very long time. Even Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Haryana assembly election scheduling also takes such a long time. Our population is huge. How the country "pays a price" for remaining in election season throughout the year, due to code of conduct is also truly a matter of concern.

Good decision by the Central Government. 1. It saves lots of taxpayers money spent on elections. 2. Elected representatives who are almost always in election mode would get at least four years to concentrate on developing their respective constituencies. 3. This would ensure seamless developmental activity throughout the country, which would otherwise be jeopardized by the Model Code of Conduct. 4. The human resources of the country will also be productive at least for 4.5 years directly impacting the growth of the country.

First of all this is against the constitution. Second is BJP govt is seeing its end so it’s a desparate attempt by BJP govt to win at least some seats with the momentum of simultaneous elections. But it’s a futile effort the obituary of BJP is already written.

Also, all the citizens of Bharat (irrespective cast, creed & Religion) should be treated and respected without any communal hatred as being Indian first. Presently, lots of communal or religion ill feelings are practiced which should be abolished with strict law of Land.
