Udupi, Nov 22: Baba alias Babanand from Koytyar in Perdoor in the district has alleged that his wife had, in connivance with some others, procured his death certificate and claimed proceeds of life insurance policy standing in his name, besides getting ownership of his land transferred in her name.
He was addressing a press conference here on Monday November 21. He said he had married Sunanda, working as Anganwadi worker in Perdoor Jogibettu, 18 years ago, and has two children. After differences arose between him and his wife, she drove him out of the house, after which he went to Mumbai and worked on daily wage basis.
“My wife, in connivance with Lalitamba, former president of the local unit of Dharmasthala Village Development Project, Prakash Shetty, N K R Upadhyaya and Sadashiva Manipal, identified the body of a stranger found lying on the railway tracks at Perampalli in 2009 as mine. With their help, my wife procured death certificate. She also claimed insurance amount of Rs 25,000 towards my death, and got my nine cents land in her name on the basis of the death certificate,” he explained.
Baba said that after reading the above details in newspapers dated November 9, 2009, he had written letters to his wife, Perdoor gram panchayat, and Hiriyadka police station, informing them that he was alive. He came to know recently that his land and insurance money had been claimed by his wife. He had filed a private complaint against this fraudulent activity in Udupi court on October 12, 2011, he informed. He also complained that the policemen of Hiriyadka policemen have not been undertaking any investigations in this regard, although they are aware of the fraud.
Perdoor gram panchayat member, Dinesh Hegde, and Suresh Marakala were present at the press conference.
