What is 'Sakath' Thottam ?
When traveling to Malpe fort from Udupi, the progress and development that has taken place over the years in the surrounding areas makes everybody happy and the locals feel proud. Since fishing is the main source of income a majority of the locals depend on fishing boats numbering to more than 500 which are stationed at the Malpe Fort.
From Malpe around a kilometre further the famous “Vadanbandeshwara Beach “ is the star attraction for tourists. And then there is St Mary’s Island, a beautiful sight to watch from the shores of Arabian Sea. Tousists not only from India but the world over visit this beautiful place. Hindi, Kannada, Tulu and Konkani movies are shot from time to time in the surrounding locations.
Hidden among this lovely pristine surroundings is Thottam, a small village that shines like a bright star. St Anne’s Church, one of the oldest parishes in the Diocese of Mangalore takes care of the spiritual needs of more than 300 Catholic families. St Anne’s Church, fondly called as 'Ajjammana Igarji'“ by the Hindu brethren has completed its 80 years of existence. Parishioners have moved out from Thottam for better prospects to different parts of the world, most of them to Gulf countries like Kuwait and the UAE.
Due to lack of communication facilities or transport people find it difficult to keep in touch. Even parishioners of the same parish sometimes do not know each other. This has led a few dynamic people from Thottam like Clifford D Souza to initiate a process to unite all the Thottamites. This process gained momentum when personalities like Alfred D'Souza, proprietor of Cab Real Estate and Frank Fernandes, proprietor of Mosaco Shipping joined hands with Clifford D'Souza along with other veterans from Thottam, and thus formed 'Sakath' (St Anne’s Kutam Thottam).
President of Sakath Alfred D'Souza is hopeful of a full-house audience for the show. He told daijiworld, "We have put in great efforts to host this mega event. We are expecting a full-house. The crowd will enjoy the sweetness of Konkani music and entertainment. The veterans of Konkani from Dubai are behind this show and we are sure that it will be a memorable one."
