New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS): Karnataka's Manish Pandey, Bengal's Manish Tiwary and Rajasthan's Ashok Menaria Friday struck double centuries to put their respective teams in commanding positions on day two of the Ranji Trophy matches being played in the Elite Division.
Pandey, who came to bat in the morning after overcoming cramps he suffered on the opening day, smashed an unbeaten 200 off 250 balls to help Karnataka amass 635 for nine in the first innings against Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium. Amit Verma was not far behind Pandey, scoring 173 off 275.
The visitors resumed the innings on 316 for 5 with Verma stitching a 157-run stand with skipper R. Vinay Kumar, who frustrated Mumbai's bowlers in his 57-run knock. Verma and Pandey shared 183 runs for the third wicket.
Mumbai came out to bat for 12 overs after Karnataka's declaration and were 37 for one at stumps. Ajinkaya Rahane and Abhishek Nayar were batting on 23 and 14.
In Kolkata, Tiwary's marathon innings of 267 along with overnight centurion Arindam Das (105) took Bengal to 496 in the first innings at the Jadavpur University Complex. Former India captain Saurav Ganguly contributed 47.
Madhya Pradesh began their reply on a promising note with captain Naman Ojha leading from the front. Ojha was on 60 while Mohnish Mishra had made 20 in team's 136 for one when play was called-off.
Menaria made 230 as Rajasthan piled up 531 for eight against Railways in Delhi. Robin Bist contributed 167. Railways, who lost the first two opening matches, were 32/1 at stumps.
The match at the Ferozshah Kotla in Delhi was nicely posed with Tamil Nadu at 281 for 8 in reply to Delhi's 212 in the first innings. Opener Abhinav Mukund was batting on 89.
