Mangalore, Nov 18: The death of a labourer working for an agency dealing in glass on Wednesday November 16 after a package of glass sheets fell on him, has given rise to controversy. A police complaint filed on behalf of Emmpire Glass functioning near Bejai church with Kadri police station says that Mohammed Shahadan, a labourer from Moradabad, had been seriously injured at around 4 pm on Wednesday, after a Tatamobile vehicle hit him at the edge of the road, resulting in a package of glass getting unloaded on him. He had died in a hospital sometime thereafter.
In the said complaint, the age of Sahahadan was stated as 18 years. Some locals, who suspect that he was a child labourer, complained to the Child Welfare Committee. Asha Naik, president of the committee, has started investigating this complaint. The locals alleged that Shahadan died while downloading parcel of glass from the truck, and not after a vehicle hit him.
Arrangements had been made to flow Sahadan’s body to his native place by air on Thursday. On the basis of the complaint that post mortem was conducted hurriedly, and a report thereof was prepared for facilitating this, Asha contacted commissioner of social welfare department, and obtained an order, staying transportation of the body. She said that further action will be initiated after verifying the birth records of Shahadan.
