Shimoga, Nov 18: A boy and his younger sister chose to jump into a well and end their lives on Thursday November 17, after their parents upbraided them for not paying attention to studies. The incident occurred at Sampagodu village near Kadtur in Teerthahali taluk in the district.
Gangan (15), a SSLC student of Kadtur government high school, and Chitra alias Ganavi (14), children of Gopal and Susheela from Sampagodu, resorted to this extreme step.
The teachers of the school had asked the parents of these children to be present at school on Thursday, to counsel them about the poor academic performance of their children. The teachers had talked to the parents about the lack of earnestness in studies on the part of the children, and had asserted that the children will have to evince more interest. This happened in the presence of the children. Thereupon, the parents had taken both the children to task for the loss of face they suffered at the school, after returning home.
The children, feeling insulted and let down, went away after lunch on Thursday. They jumped into a well located near their home together. Before doing so, they left a suicide note, in which they said no one was responsible for their deaths.
A case got registered in Agumbe police station in this connection.
