Kundapur, Nov 18: The popular demand of the local people and a protest organized by them to press their demand for a halt in the local railway station for the recently extended Bangalore-Mangalore train to Karwar, has paid off. The railways, it is learnt, have decided to add the town in the list of stations where this train will stop.
The train has started running to Karwar since November 15. When the dream of the train extension came through, it had brought with it disappointment for the people of the taluk, as they found that the train does not stop here. The people had waved black flags when the train passed through the local railway station on Tuesday, to show their anger.
It is learnt that the department has bowed to the wishes of the people, after considering the justification of their demand. At the same time, it is gathered that the department is considering modification in the time table of the train, as the train reaches Karwar at around midnight as per the present time table. The train moves through Karnataka coast either late night or early morning, which means that the people will not be able to make optimum utilization of this train, and railways may face revenue loss on account of this disadvantage.
Sources said that the department of railways wants to ensure that the train reaches Karwar latest by 10 pm. A decision on this proposal will be made known within a few days, they added.
A release by the town unit of Congress said that union minister, K H Muniyappa, has agreed to halt the train at the local station. President of the unit, Ganesh Sherugar, said that the unit thanks Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes, former state minister, K Jayaprakash Hegde, and MLC, K Pratapchandra Shetty for their efforts in this direction. Koteshwar Rotary Club and Railway Passengers Welfare Forum too have congratulated everyone who joined their hands in the effort to get the above facility.
