London, Nov 15 (IANS): Surface-to-air missiles could be deployed to ensure security of the skies over London during the 2012 Olympics, a top British official has said.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said "all necessary measures" will be taken to ensure security during the games, The Sun reported Tuesday.

Hammond said "appropriate ground to air defences" could be put in place if that was recommended by military chiefs.

His comments came amid reports that said the US would send 1,000 special agents, including 500 from the FBI, to protect American athletes and diplomats.

US officials are particularly concerned about Britain's security measures.

Scotland Yard chief Chris Allison, who is in charge of policing the games, has denied there were tensions with the US.

"I feel great support from the Americans. I am satisfied the games will be safe and secure," he said.

Around 12,000 British police officers will provide security during the games along with 15,000 private security officials in an operation worth 600 million pounds.

Surface-to-air missiles have been used as defence cover at every Olympic Games since Atlanta in 1996.
