Mangalore, Nov 4: In an incident that occurred near Valencia in the city late night on Wednesday November 2, some medical students beat up the driver of the Tempo Traveller vehicle hired by them and his friend, for refusing to ferry them to Manipal.
Seven male and six female students from a medical college in Manipal had come to a bar in Valencia on Wednesday night for partying. At around 9 pm, they called up a nearly travel agent to book a Tempo Traveller vehicle for taking them back to Manipal. The agent contacted Raghuvir Bhagawat, and asked him to pick up the students from the bar concerned.
Raghuvir parked his vehicle near the said bar, and waited. After waiting for long, he called up the students. They promised to come soon, but approached him at around 11.30 pm. After observing that the students were heavily drunk and not in their senses, Bhagawat refused to carry them. Angered, the students assaulted Bhagawat and his friend, Harishchandra, who was with the driver, it is said.
Harishchandra, who was badly injured, was admitted into a private hospital here. It is learnt that he will be operated upon for his head injuries today. A complaint filed with Pandeshwar police station also alleges that a five sovereign gold bracelet the tempo driver was wearing has gone missing.
The policemen, who registered a case, took into custody two students, Param Paul Bhatia and Ankit Sharma. They were released after interrogation, it is gathered.
