Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (PS)
Mangalore, Nov 2: In the wake of reports regarding a flat owners' association in the city barring Muslims from taking tenancy in their flats, city police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh speaking to daijiworld said that as police had not yet received any complaint on the issue, local police will now take action suo moto against the flat owners' association president.
"After the issue was exposed by the media, we expected someone to come forward and file a complaint. However, as no one has taken the initiative, police will exercise its power to act suo moto," he said.
He further said that action will be taken based on the report submitted by the police, and on the particular words used in the notification. The case would be criminal in nature, he added.
Meanwhile, Suresh Karkada, president of Prasad Apartment owners association told the media that the resolution wherein it was mentioned that no Muslims could be given flats on rent or lease was passed in a meeting in consultation with three Muslim owners staying in the apartments.
It is said that earlier, a Muslim family who were tenants troubled these three Muslim owners over some issues, after which they decided not to rent out flats to Muslims.
Following media reports on Wednesday November 2, the notice at the apartments was removed.
The sixth condition was underlined with red ink to ensure that the owners take note of the particular condition without fail.
The notice has remained in the apartment notice board for about eight months now, and surprisingly, no one had raised an objection to this illegal resolution till it was highlighted by the media.
