Sullia, Jun 26: The Yeslur police arrested four individuals following an assault on a group of young men from Mangaluru at the Patla Betta tourist spot near Bisile Ghat in Subramanya.
The incident took place on June 23 when a youth from Mangaluru's Kottara, along with his friends, visited Patla Betta for a day of sightseeing. According to the complaint, as the group was returning from the tourist spot, they were intercepted by local drivers at the entrance of Patla Betta. The drivers allegedly used abusive language and attempted to extort money from the youths.
The accused, identified as Gagan, Kiran, Nishanth, and Madan, were reported to the Yeslur police by Bhavit, a resident of Mangaluru, through an email complaint. The complaint accused the four of hooliganism and extortion. Following a thorough investigation, the Yeslur police arrested the suspects for their involvement in the crime.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video showing the assault on the youths went viral on social media, leading to an outpouring of anger and concern. In response to the incident, a group of youths from Subramanya met with deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday. They submitted a memorandum requesting immediate action to curb illegal extortion and ensure the safety of tourists at popular destinations like Patla Betta.
