Mangalore, Oct 27: During Deepavali, people like to decorate their houses with colourful lights and lamps, as it happens to be a festival of lights. Lighting of earthen lamps, although in vogue even now, is not very popular as strong winds tend to extinguish the flame. This time however, scores of people had to celebrate Deepavali in darkness.
Power supply woes were witnessed all over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, electricity supply was restored to most part of the coast. In cities, generators installed by apartments were seen roaring through out the night on Tuesday.
Often, power supply gets cut the moment lightning appears. The supply resumes some time later, but goes off again when the next lightning appears. On several occasions, it takes several hours to resume power supply.
Mescom officials say that technical problems which occur in power lines due to lightning, has been the root cause for the problem. They said that a problem had arisen after a breaker of 220 kv in Kemar was burnt down due to lightning on Tuesday evening due to lightning. After repairs were conducted, Udupi district got power by 10 pm, while some parts of Dakshina Kannada district received power supply by 12 am. They said that all concerned repairs were completed by Wednesday evening.
