Mangalore: Diwali Celebrations Turn Ugly - Firecrackers Damage Vehicles

Mangalore, Oct 27: Despite several warning issued by the media, the government, various organizations, and individuals about safe handling of crackers on ‘Diwali’, mishaps are happening.

In a bizarre incident at Classic Home Apartments near Marnamikatte, Diwali celebration by children turned ugly when two vehicles were damaged by fire crackers around 10 pm on Wednesday October 26.






















A two-wheeler, Pulsar 220, with the registration number KA 19 / EA/ 2771, suffered 80 percent loss due to fire, and an Indica car with registration number KA 19 / AC 7799 suffered partial damage. It is learnt that the fire occured in the building’s parking lot. An eye witness said that prompt arrival of the fire service prevented major loss of vehicles and lives.

A resident of the apartment, speaking to Daijiworld, said that a few residents were not home for Diwali, and most of the other residents were unaware of the incident until the fire fighters reached the spot. There have been no injuries to anyone.

    People are absolutely careless. This is all bound to happen sometime or the other and if nothing happened like this we are plain lucky. Already, today's newspaper reported 15 kids lost partial eyesight. Some years ago I read that a person travelling in a scooter was killed after a rocket hit his stomach.

    We spend thousands or rupees to buy these dangerous goods which is of no value except causing immense sound and air pollution.

    I have seen people firing those dreaded rockets and those serial crackers in crowded gallis where there are vehicles parked, electric cables hanging lose, clothes and many more highly inflammable items. One moron in my neighbourhood blasts crackers at 5 AM and don't care for the people in the vicinity who work in the night shift and just started to sleep. Such is the reckless celebration.

    I donated a nice sweet packet which I got from my office and some biscuits to the garbage collector boy in my locality on the day of diwali. I pitied that he worked on a day when everyone celebrated. I lit beautiful diyas in my house. I taught the importance of a noise free Diwali to my kid and friends. This is the way I celebrate Diwali.

    Ms. Lavita, these are stupid children only, it is common sense that you do not play with fire around petrol, is it not? These children seem old enough to know that, you only should know that. In UAE there is much space in the desert, here in India one must be careful before playing with such evil devilry as space is limited.

    Festivals are meant to be celebrated. Celebrations in all forms must go on. However community based fireworks display seems to be the answer. It brings together people from all walks of life, fireworks may be handled by professionals. Our experience in Manipal has been very encouraging. Many families attend the fireworks display held at KMC greens on every Deepavali (not to forget attendance by the less privileged from special school/child care centers). Community based fireworks display reduces the pollution, accidents, and brings people together!

    Diwali, festival of lights, the light should come out from within and sparkle outside. Spending money on lanterns, to light and crackers used to deafen ones ears, what a show!! Do they realize the number of patients lying in the hospitals fighting between life and death, the exorbitant bills they have to pay for their treatment in the hospitals, the beggars, deformed, the lepers lying at the roadside begging, the homeless, how many do not get the basic needs met, digging from the garbage looking for something to put in their mouths, the orphans in the orphanages, how many countless people are suffering in Mangalore alone. There are sick, mentally disabled, old people in the home and with every fireworks, shakes your mind and your body. There is something like a bomb sound, one is enough to shake even a normal person, what about the unfortunate in the houses, also whose heart is weak. Such a disturbance all over this Diwali season. Fireworks should be played at big open grounds and not at residential areas where houses are located close to each other. Parents should train their children well how to use crackers even before buying them. When small, they should be taught what is good and what is bad and not give anything and everything they ask so that when they grow bigger they will not behave stubborn when refused something and end their lives. How many accidents can be avoided when we care for others as we care for our selves.

    Deepavali is festival for light and not of crackers, how many children lost their eyes for sake of a moment joys,
    fire cracker industry mafia use minor children in their factory for these dangerous game. Time is over to ban children to work in cracker factory

    Dear Friends-why don't we celebrate the Festival of Lights to drive-away darkness & ignorance of sound, pollution & destruction?
    Let us save all the money we waste by ligting Fire-crackers & donate them to charities- where it will be used to satiate the hungry & needy, who are deprived of their basic needs itself.
    Hope our future generation learns their lessons by these mistakes.

    Diwali comes once in a year and it is a time for fun and enjoyment.But our enjoyment should not hurt or damage others health or property.We should be careful about it.My personal opinion is not to ban crackers but children should be educated how/when/where to use fire crackers?

    I really think these noisy n harmful crackers must b banned...
    its harming poor animals and our environment.. Humans can atleast understand what is happening around us but lot of mental trauma is caused to  the poor animals :(

    Here in Bahrain you don't even here the hiss of a fire cracker, let alone the blast. They not only pollute the air, create sound polltion, damage, disturb the aged, scare the babies and letter the place all over. All in all, there is no benefit from fire crackers and our wiser polititians should ban them totally.

    No doubt that the festivals are for celebrating and enjoying. But, not at the cost of destroying property, vehicles, threat to life,loosing eye sights, threat to environment.
    It's unethical to protect tradition at high cost and sometimes non-repairable damage. Let the Deepavalis to be limited to lights not to destructive fires and blasts.

    Why this fire work? Is it to create noise and air pollution ? Instead of these nuesence and nonsense .,lighting lamps ,goodeepa, distributing sweets etc are 100 times better way of enjoying any feast.

    Luckily no human loss.This is absolutely carelessness and media, NGO,and Govt agencies time and again cautioned to take care of using crackers went futile especially during time festival. Across Karnataka
    news are pouring in TV media about the causality due to cracker busting in unsecured and unscientifically. Unfortunately,every year we are loosing innocent young lives due to irresponsible way of busting crackers especially during festival time which need a serious thought to avoid such accidents in future.
