Mangalore: Lightning Strike Kills Student, Friend Critically Injured

Mangalore, Oct 25: A student lost his life after being struck by lightning near KPT ground in Kadri police limit here on Monday October 24 night. His friend also sustained burn injuries and was admitted to a hospital in critical condition.
 
Naveen (21) who was studying in KPT college is the deceased. Son of Puttanna Gowda, a resident of Gutthigaru near Sullia, Naveen was staying at the college hostel.

At around 8.30 pm on Monday, he and his friend Ganesh (21), son of Krishnappa Gowda of Balila in Sullia taluk, were walking passing through the KPT ground on their way to recharge Naveen's mobile from a nearby shop. Lightning struck both of them and Naveen died on the spot. Ganesh was immediately admitted to a private hospital by the locals.

It is also suspected that Naveen was speaking on the phone when lightning struck him. His body was shifted to Wenlock mortuary. A case of UDR has been registered in Kadri police station.

Though power supply was hit due to lightning, many electrical goods were reported burnt last night in and around the city.

    Mr.Dolfred D'Souza, external flashover is possible only in the case of a wet person, or else the human body acts as a conductor, causing multiple internal injuries, most probably death.

    Let us all learn from others mistakes. It is an eye opener for all of us. God has given us wisdom and we have to use it in a proper way. During thunder, lightning, strictly do not use mobile phones, TV, and also as mentioned by one of the commentators, do not use mobile when it is being charged.

    I would also like to mention here that safety rules should be strictly adhered to even in the aircrafts "mobile phones should be switched off" & "fasten your seatbelts". I have noticed that even when the plane is about to take off, people using mobile phone and seatbelts not fastened. Same thing when the plane is about to land till it is stopped completely, people are so impatient, they will unfasten their seat belts and also use their mobiles to call. The air hostesses do their job of informing the passengers, but see the haste. Any untoward dangers could be avoided when each and every person follow the rules and regulations carefully for the benefit of all. "Slow and steady wins the race".

    Its very sad to hear about Naveen and Ganesh. May the soul of Naveen rest in peace.Also let Ganesh get well soon.
    When a person is hit by lightning, the high resistance of human skin causes the lightning charge to flow over the body - often known as an 'external flashover'.
    If you're struck by lightning on its own it will flash over your body but if you're holding a phone it will internalise and cause much worse injuries. The metal in the phone directs the current into the body.

    Extremely sad to hear the demise of KPT student Naveen near KPT ground caused due to lightening struck him. Pray to Almighty to give strength to Naveen’s parents, siblings and relatives to bear this great loss. May his soul rest in peace.

    Very sad indeed! Condolences to the bereaved family of Naveen, and best wishes for the full recovery of Ganesh. It is noted that Naveen was on his mobile while the lightening struck him. After all, there may be some truth in the finding sometime in the past that the cell phones (radio active waves) tend to attract thunder and lightening, just like when lightening takes place there is sudden in electricity power, causing short circuit and damage to the electrical gadgets and appliances. One should, therefore, as a precaution, avoid using the mobile phones as well. I have read somewhere that one should not answer the mobile phones as well, when they are on charge.

    But friends this a caution,it is s aid that he was on his mobile,so let us understand when there is lighting i am sure it effects the mobile.Even in the petrol pumps dont not use mobiles we can see accidents in "youtube" Just type Mobile phone accidents,& you will see.

    Mobile manufactuerers to make note of this incident. Make a case study and if it is the real case, then they have to warn the users the disadvantages in their list. Necessary advise and precautions need to be taken while using mobiles in lightening conditions.

    May the soul rest in peace.May god give the strength to overcome grief of loss of loved one.Call progress on Cell Phone of deceased might be likely reason of striking lightning directly.Therefore, please avoid CELL PHONE as well as LAND PHONE during lightning time.
