Kandy (Sri Lanka), Oct 22 (IANS): Gurbani Singh asserted herself as one of the leading amateurs in the region by winning the 124th Sri Lankan Amateur Golf championships here Saturday.
The young Indian showed great stamina by beating Isza Fariza Ismail of Malaysia on the 34th hole. She earlier won the semi-finals on the 16th hole.
It was sweet revenge for the Indians, as Isza Fariza was the one who beat Gauri Monga earlier in the quarter-finals. Gurbani beat Thom Yuet of Malaysia five and three in quarter-finals and then Shanika Fernando of Sri Lanka in the semi-finals.
Gurbani's win is another feather in the cap for Indian Golf Union, as last month Aditi Ashok had won the title in the Malaysian Open.
The Indian contingent had another boost as Seenappa Chikkarangappa finished runners- up with a total score of 292 over 72 holes in the men's competition. Chikka's effort included a 66 in the third round.
A day earlier, Chikka and Gagan Verma won the international team event with a total score of 297 for two days. The women's team, too, had finished second.
