Udupi: Gold, Silver Worth Lacs Stolen from Jewellery Store in Parkala

Udupi, Oct 21: Gold and silver ornaments worth lacs were reported stolen from 'Sriraj Jewellers' located in Parkala near Manipal was burgled on Thursday October 21 night. The incident came to light on Friday October 21 morning.
Thieves managed to break open the shutters of the jewellery store and decamped with 356 grams of gold and 3.25 kg of silver. The total worth of the stolen ornaments is estimated at Rs 9.50 lac, as per Manipal police.
Sriraj Jewellery is located on the main road of Parkala. The thieves got away with almost the entire stock of jewellery, it is said. The store, suprisingly, has no security alarm or CCTV, which has made investigation tougher for the police.
Moreover, though lockers are in place, the jewellery was not secured under lock and key, sources said. The shutter of the shop is said to be very old and this would have made the task easier for the thieves.
The residents of a house located adjacent to the store said that they did not hear anything and came to know of the incident only in the morning, when the store employees came for duty as raised an alarm.
Preliminary invsetigation revealed that the thieves dragged out trays on which the gold ornaments were displayed and emptied the contents into a gunny bag used to store sand. The trays were strewn all over the place.
Sources said that Manipal police station SI Kulakarni had advised store owner Raviraj Acharya to install alarm system and CCTVs six months ago. However, Acharya did not heed to the advice.
Udupi SP Dr Ravikumar and other senior police officers rushed to the spot. Investigations are on.
