Four-year-old girl attacked by stray dog, succumbs in Raichur

Raichur, May 21 (IANS): In a tragic incident in Koravinahala village of Karnataka's Raichur district, a four-year-old girl fell victim to a stray dog attack and succumbed to injuries on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Lavanya, daughter of Keralinga.

Fifteen days ago, seven children were attacked by a stray dog while they were playing. Lavanya was bitten on the back of her neck and other parts of her body.

Lavanya was discharged from the hospital two days ago and was under treatment at her residence. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries. The other children who were attacked by the dog are still under treatment.

Keralinga, Lavanya's father, stated that his daughter was attacked right in front of their residence.

He urged the authorities to take action to ensure that other children in the village do not meet the same fate as his daughter.

The villagers said that to date, the authorities have not visited the village to enquire about the affected children. The dog was killed by the villagers on the same day of the attack.

Kariyappa, the Panchayat Development Officer of Samagakunta village, said that he got information about the incident on Tuesday and will visit the village.

He said that a rescue team would be sent to look out for stray dogs that were attacking people.

"We received information that the dog was not local and had strayed from a different region. While traveling to another place, it attacked the children," he said.

The villagers have expressed their outrage alleging negligence by the authorities.

It is astonishing to see complete lack of awareness on prevailing law by common people. What is required is foremost widespread awareness of current laws before spewing hatred based on limited information. It is important for everyone to know that Animal birth control is the only viable dog population management option supported globally and implemented in India from last 25 years. Dogs are present from 30000 years atleast and their population didnot decrease by killing. Such sad instances are heard more now because of wide availability of social media. Instead of suggesting amateur solutions better to follow government advisories like those feeding dogs are already doing and keep communities safe.

Animal trust people are not sterilizing the dogs. Not giving rabies injection. In buntwal one cow died of rabies. recently. one bitch keeps more than 5 puppies and all grows. and again puppies. Govt need dogs family. For what we do not know. No body are bothered to take action against these animal trust people. Govt is paying for them. Govt should cover some land may be half an acre and put all dogs family there. Enough meat and fish waste available in the town. they can feel them. it is easier for them to sterilize them. Dog lovers should be given pass to visit them. They can stay with them to take care of them and to love them. House dogs are tied in a place whole day and fed them.

Christine Mangalore ,as you said all this what brings at the end? What is the use of such stray dogs to feed and look after?Who pays ?Why dont one make short process to sick dogs ?Bring a strict law so that those who possess one dog to register and ear mark. When left out ,can make out .One who loves dog should also lookafter them .Now so many children are bitten and one already dead.Even of late we heard old person was bitten to death .This cant go on for long.Officials must be taken to task.or ask them to stay in front of these dogs. Its a shame to Panchayat with all their explanations.

I don't know what is right and what is wrong. But back during my childhood when dogs were killed by the authorities, this problem used to be much much lesser. The number of dogs on the roads were very less. I don't say killing dogs is right, but we also need to save children, women, and aged people.

Stop feeding the stray dogs. If you dont feed they will not stay. They run to a different place. These stray dogs bite the visitors. Because faces are not familiar. Panchayat should take active step to sterile the stray dogs. Otherwise they litter so many puppies which will be a more menace to the society. Children, elders get acared when they see a stray dog out of fear. These dogs chase them and bite them. There are so many in udupi manipal in every sub lane. Why Panchayat is quiet is my question. Why corporators are quiet. They dont get the heat of the nuisance of stray dogs. They travel by cars. These dogs in herds attack the cattle. Last year one big cow died because of the bites of the dog . Those who are against to my comment, please take all the stray dogs and keep in your compound. You ppl dont feel sad when children/animal die because of the stray dog bites. Disgusting
