Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (MS)

Mangaluru/Udupi, May 19: Pre-monsoon rains intensified in the twin districts of the coastal region on Saturday, bringing copious amounts of rain to several areas.

Heavy rains lashed Beltangady, Mundaje, Charmady, Guruvayanakere, Koyyuru, Madyantharu, and Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada. In Udupi district, Udupi city area, Manipal, Kundapur, Tekkatte, Basruru, and Karkala received substantial rainfall.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert from May 19 to 22, expecting the rains to continue. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea from May 18 to 22 due to potential low pressure forming in the Bay of Bengal, which may cause the Arabian Sea to become turbulent. The Dakshina Kannada district administration has instructed all fishing boats in deep sea to return to shore immediately.

In Beltangady, the rains began around 4 pm and continued until midnight. Shops in Maddadka were inundated, and blocked underground drainages in Ujire caused water to overflow onto the roads. Motorists had to navigate slimy roads where national highway work is ongoing. Many areas in the taluk experienced power outages due to heavy winds.
