Mangaluru, May 16: Dr Nareshchand Hegde, a renowned heart specialist, is set to contest as an independent candidate in the Karnataka legislative council polls from the prestigious southwest teacher's constituency on June 3. Historically, the constituency has seen politicians without degrees elected, leaving serious educational issues unresolved. This time, educated voters are seeking an able leader from their ranks.
Dr Hegde, born into a distinguished family, is the son of Dr Manoranjan Das Hegde, a well-known government doctor in Udupi. His wife, Saroja M. Hegde, is a graduate and homemaker. Dr Hegde’s wife, Dr Jyothi Rao, is a respected pharmacology guide. Dr Hegde himself is a professor and heart specialist at K S Hegde Medical Academy, with a notable career spanning multiple prestigious institutions including Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and Rajarajeshwari Medical Institute, Bengaluru.
With a background rich in medical achievements, Dr Hegde has performed thousands of rare heart and organ surgeries, saving numerous lives. He has presented research theses nationally and internationally, participated in over fifty medical conferences, and published a significant research report on heart problems in a national journal. He also created curricula for B.Sc. and M.Sc. perfusion technology courses and served as a senate member of Mangalore University and president of KMC Irndocs Association.
The teacher’s constituency, which includes Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts, is home to several quality educational institutions. Dr Hegde’s extensive experience and active involvement in social service make him a promising candidate, embodying the qualities of a cultured, well-educated leader who understands the challenges faced by educators.
