CAA comes to fruition: Home Ministry hands over first citizenship certificates to 14 individuals

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS): The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday issued the first set of citizenship certificates to at least 14 applicants under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

"The certificates were handed over by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla in the national capital," the MHA said in a press note.

Notably, the Centre notified the CAA rules for implementation on March 11, 2024, as the law remained in the 'dormant' state for a couple of years.

The applications for citizenship under the CAA were moved from persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who entered India till December 31, 2014, on account of religious persecution.

The Empowered Committee headed by Director (Census Operation) after due scrutiny of papers granted citizenship to 14 applicants.

The CAA, seeking to give Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighbouring nations including Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh was passed by the Parliament in 2019.

The law, however, after enactment by the Parliament, got embroiled in controversy as demonstrations and protests mushroomed across the country.

First, the violent protests and then the outbreak of the Covid pandemic apparently led to long delays in the notification of CAA.

Not all countries, only 3 countries because these countries were once part of India and because there is persecution of minorities.

Muslims are not persecuted in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. So why will they come as refugees to India? CAA is limited to minorities of 3 countries only.

If India bloc comes to power they will definitely grant citizenship (without discrimination) to refugees coming from 3 neighbouring countries. And all know who are those refugees.

This is not the first time foreigners have been naturalized in India. In 2020, thousands were naturalized, and hundreds of them were Muslims. You can check out the old news. Even Adnan Sami was naturalized in India. The current move is to help those religious minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh who face persecution. It was an unfortunate decision by their elders to stay back in 1947, and their descendents should not be punished for it. They have every right to return to India, and we cannot and will not deport them back to hell!  Practically, it is very difficult to cancel these types of bills passed by previous governments. The Indian National Congress will never do it because it will try to remain in power at any cost. That party will never invite the wrath of the majority vote bank; instead, they will issue free rations to the minorities to shut their mouths forever.
