Unfortunately, the youth died of suffocation on May 10. Puttur rural police have registered a murder case and arrested the mother of the deceased and the neighbour.
The deceased is identified as Chethan (33), the son of late Koragappa Shetty, a resident of Bettampady Kanamoole. His mother, Umavathi, and neighbour Yusuf are the accused arrested by the police.
Chethan
Chethan picked up a quarrel with his mother at home on the night of May 9. It is said that he went to his neighbour Yusuf’s house in the wee hours of May 10 and broke the window pane. Yusuf called Umavathi and informed her of the matter.
Chethan’s mother Umavathi and her son-in-law went to neighbour Yusuf’s house and tried to pacify Chethan and urged him to return home. However, he was adamant. As a last resort, a chain was tied around his body and neck, and he was pulled towards his home by Umavathi and Yusuf. However, as Chethan reached home, he tried to free himself from the chain, which tightened, leading to his death from suffocation.
As Chethan was in a sleeping position and did not move for a long time, his family members brought him to Puttur hospital. He had breathed his last by then. Police received information from the hospital, and when they arrived at Umavathi's house, they initially suspected that Chethan had committed suicide. However, after stern interrogation by the police, the matter of tying the chain around Chethan’s neck came to light. Both Umavathi and her neighbour Yusuf were taken into custody by the police.
The mortal remains of Chethan were sent to the forensic laboratory at Deralakatte due to suspicion behind the cause of death. Dakshina Kannada SP Ryshyanth C B visited the spot. Puttur rural police are investigating further.
