Udupi: Lifeguard assaulted by tourists at Malpe beach

Udupi, May 8: A lifeguard at Malpe beach was assaulted by a group of six tourists on Wednesday, May 8 evening.

The victim, lifeguard Teja Kotian, had instructed the group not to venture into the rough sea, as it was unsafe. Despite the warnings, the group ignored the alerts and continued to swim beyond the designated safe boundaries.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, lifeguard Teja Kotian intervened. However, instead of cooperating, the group members attacked him.

Following the assault, other lifeguards and Homeguards present at the scene attempted to apprehend the assailants as they fled in a Swift Maruti car with license plate number KAO4 AD8286.

A case has been filed at Malpe police station.

    If anyone causes a nuisance at the beach, the administration team should promptly involve the police rather than engaging in arguments with tourists. There should be clear guidelines regarding who handles which aspect of the situation.

    I feel the local staff in Malpe need a lot of training on how to be polite with tourists. Those days when locals used to harass outsiders are gone. If we need income from tourists, then we should learn to treat customers like God. We should also remember that Malpe is not the only beach in India.

    The lifeguard were polite and the tourist ignored their request. If they had continued to be polite they would have risked their life in the deep waters. Such anti-social elements are not welcome in any beach.

    Vinod Udipi ,there are two sides always .First you say if you want income from tourists ,have to be polite.Her his polite ways were discarded and went far in water.Incase in such situation when a wave comes or something happens they blame again lifeguards why they did allow and not warned them.One should respect what he says .They know better.If elsewhere a beach is there who is saying they should remain in Malpe beach?Let them go.Just before the rainy season beginn we know sea is rough and and high waves come.

    Arrest them immediately and put them behind the bar. This should be a lesson to others. Administration should not take it lightly, because future will be very hard days for lifeguards.

    There have been many deaths at Malpe beach The lifeguard who was trying to save them was assualted by a group of holligans They need no mercy at all Must be taken to task and arrested and punsihed as per the law of the land and brought to justice
