Mangalore, Oct 11: The Kannada Sahitya Parishat and Kalkura Prathishtana organized the 110th birth anniversary celebration of Dr Shivaram Karanth at Town Hall here on Monday October 10.
The programme was inaugurated by litterateur couple Prof U B Upadhyaya and Susheela Upadhyaya. District-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar presided.
The 'Karantha Prashashthi' this year was conferred on veteran dance choreographer Vittal Master.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Upadhyaya said that it is worth pondering as to why great writers like Shivaram Karanth, Kuvempu, Masti Venkatesh Iyengar did not make a name internationally. He added, "In a way we are responsible for this. We should have taken the responsibility of translating the great works of these writers and spreading their fragrance across the Indian boundary."
Palemar, in his address, said that Karanth was not just a writer. He was a person who had the skill to do well in almost every aspect of art be it films or Yakshagana. Further, he added, "His contribution to Yakshagana is something unforgettable. He is a true patron."
