Udupi: Intoxication of Bus Passengers - Suspect Held

Udupi, Oct 10: A person named Clement D’Souza, a resident of Mumbai, was taken into custody from the town on Sunday October 9.
Allegedly, D’Souza has been in the habit of travelling in buses moving between Mangalore and Mumbai, befriending the passengers sitting next to him, serving them biscuits and beverage mixed with intoxicants, and robbing their valuables, once they lose consiousness.
Some time back, a person named Vishwanath Shetty from Kumble, while travelling to the city from Mumbai, had lost cash and gold ornaments worth about Rs 1.5 lac in this manner. On Sunday, Shetty had boarded a Mumbai-bound bus again. He saw D’Souza travelling in the same bus. Growing suspicious, he passed on information to Mulki police station, where had head earlier lodged a complaint.
As soon as the bus reached Udupi, the accused was handed over to the police. As the earlier complaint in this connection was lodged in Mulky police station, he was taken there. A number of similar cases have been registered with the police, and if the police are able to prove involvement of the accused in all these cases, they will succeed in solving all of them at a stretch.
The police are in the course of interrogating the accused, and are yet to register a case officially. It is said that the police have recovered some tablets and biscuits which are capable of intoxicating those who consume them, for several hours.
