Udupi, Oct 8: “Land in undivided Dakshina Kannada district undergoes rapid destruction due to various reasons. The stone inscriptions that convey Tulunadu cultural hierarchy are sliding into oblivion. It’s essential to protect these stone inscriptions for posterity,” said Karnataka History Academy secretary Dr S S Gopal Rao.
He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day UGC-sponsored state-level workshop on study of stone inscriptions at St Mary’s College, Shirva, on Friday October 7.
“The study of stone inscriptions educates one and enhances knowledge about history,” said Dr Rao. He expressed deep concern over there being just two stone inscription scholars from Karnataka in the entire Archaeology Survey of India.
St Mary’s Education Institutions’ correspondent Fr Stany Tauro said that every Indian embodies the native culture. He hoped that many stone inscription scholars emerge from the study workshop.
St Mary’s College principal Dr J C Miranda welcomed the gathering.
Head of department of history Professor Gopalakrishna Samaga delivered the introductory address. Professor Dr S Padmanabha Bhat conducted the programme. Karnataka History Academy Udupi unit president Dr B Jagdish Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
Dr H S Gopal Rao, Dr P Ganapayya Bhat, Dr Jagdish Shetty, and Professor T Murugeshi were the resource persons.
The students were taken on a study tour to Udyavar, the former capital of the Alupa dynasty.
