Karkala, Apr 7: The Karkala rural police arrested the headmaster of Barabailu Government Higher Primary School in Bola village on April 6, following allegations of sexually harassing approximately 14 girl students.
The accused Rajendra Acharya (58), a resident of Bola Vanjarakatte, also holds the position of head priest at Piliyuru Ichchodi Mahalingeshwara Temple.
According to the complaint, he allegedly sexually harassed the students repeatedly between June 5, 2023, and April 3, 2024. Additionally, it was reported that he harassed the elder sister of one student by sending obscene photos to her mobile phone.
There were many complaints about Rajendra Achar sexually harassing minor girls, and the villagers had advised and warned him against, it is said. However, he was reportedly incorrigible and continued his old behavior. As a result, the Udupi Women and Child Welfare Department (Child Welfare Unit) visited the school and conducted a comprehensive investigation. Complaints were received from a total of 14 minor female students who had been sexually assaulted and this action was taken only after collecting appropriate evidence. Headmaster Rajendra Achar has served his tenure in various schools. Presently he was transferred and serving as headmaster of Barabailu School.
A case was registered at the Karkala rural police station, and the accused was presented before the special POCSO court in Udupi later on April 6.
The court has ordered judicial custody for the accused for 14 days.
