Belgaum, Oct 5: In a move aimed at bringing about 'positive' changes in society's attitude towards HIV-affected people, a mega convention of HIV-positive married couples and those on the verge of getting married, will be held here on Saturday October 8.
The city-based Spandana Network of Positive People will organize the mega convention. The organization has urged HIV-positive men and women, widowers and widows to participate in the convention. The identity of the participants will be kept confidential.
The convention aims to demonstrate that even HIV-positive people can lead normal marital lives.
The Spandana organization believes that the disease can be curbed and prevented from spreading if HIV-positive men and women get married to each other.
Such conventions have been held in the past in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, although in Karnataka it will be the first. The organizers expect good response, with over 250 people from Bellary, Bangalore, Chikmagalur, Hubli-Dharwad, Shimoga, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts likely to participate.
According to statistics, Belgaum and Udupi districts top the list of HIV-positive cases in the state.
