Unhappy CWG OC Asks Dutch Firm to Return Money

New Delhi, Oct 5 (PTI): Unhappy with the work of a Dutch firm during the Commonwealth Games, the Organising Committee has asked it to immediately return payment of nearly Rs 6.5 crore for ''incomplete services'' and ''breach of agreement''.

The OC is also taking action against its own former and present officials for releasing over Rs seven crore, which was 70 per cent of the total contract value, to the company without doing proper check of its working.

The case involves Netherland-based Infostrada Sports, which was given a contract of USD 2,060,000 (about Rs 10.16 crore) on June 6 last year to provide Games News Service.

Interestingly, payment of USD 1,442,000 (nearly Rs 7.11 crore) was made by the OC prior to the commencement of the games without detailed verification of the services by the company.

“As per findings of the managerial analysis of the deliverables, it has been noticed that M/s Infostrada Sports has not fully delivered as per terms and conditions of the contract....

“It was a breach of agreement and hence the performance being zero. Therefore, no payment becomes due for the incomplete services,” Chief Executive Officer of the Games Organising body, Jarnail Singh, said in a letter written to the company.

The Organising Committee officials noticed deficiencies in number of biographies of athletes made by Infostrada Sports and other works related to the Commonwealth Games.

“You are therefore to ensure that the excess payment of USD 13,12,220 (nearly Rs 6.5 crore) is refunded to the OC Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010.... In failure to do so, OC shall be compelled to initiate appropriate proceedings against M/s Infostrada,” Singh said in the letter.

    To whom it may concern:

I worked in the Press Operations department for Delhi2010 as a contractor and I am continually dismayed at the lack of thorough investigative journalism being done in relation to this and other similar stories of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. If you want the true story, why not ask someone who was actually there? I am also extremely frustrated by the lack of understanding in the media and general public of how the different Functional Areas of Organising Committees work and who is responsible for what. Again, you should be asking people who were actually involved rather than regurgitating reports form incompetent officials associated with the Delhi2010 Organising Committee whose main concern is (and was) to make sure they are not implicated in the disastrous planning and delivery of this event. If you truly understand what Infostrada Sports was able to provide in the way of news and information for accredited journalists in Delhi, you will quickly swing the nature of your reporting to instead take on the vast array of inept Delhi2010 officials who have yet to be made accountable for their roles in the debacle. They refused to take advice or heed warnings from experienced event contractors, and instead concentrated on their own internal political agendas to sabotage the Games and make sure enemies within the Organising Committee failed in their roles. Your etc, Phil
